backyard lounge II - recap

Thanks so much to all our neighbors and friends who came out for our second BackYard Lounge event of the summer.

The evening started off right with Trick Turner greeting the sunset with a blend of signature sounds, as early arrivals sat down with a sip from Venice Beach Wines.

Later, the second installment of Project Social hosted by Urbanic really got going and everyone’s creative streak came through, making do-it-yourself post cards with a very Venice theme.

Finally the event culminated with a super-fresh Fashion Show by local Venice designers  - Aviator Nation.

The runway for the show was provided by Neighborhood’s neighbor to the south, Office of Mobile Design.

BackYard Lounge - Second Edition

BackYard Lounge lives on!

Neighbors and friends, please join us for another evening of local flavor, featuring this month’s special guests: Aviatior Nation.

We are completely enamored with our new jewelry line by Catherine Weitzman. They are handmade in Hawaii and the pieces are cast directly from objects found in nature.

Our first shipment included elegant coral earrings and necklaces and a beautiful silver sand dollar.

Don’t forget to come to Abbot Kinney on July 11th for First Fridays. We will have some snacks and drinks this time, but we are prepping for another BackYard Lounge in August. More on that later…

Given that our name is Neighborhood, we are always looking for cool lines made by people in our neighborhood, Venice CA. That’s why we are especially excited to have locally made Aviator Nation in the store.

These vintage inspired tee-shirts look and feel like the real thing. That’s because the creator - Paige Mycoskie, has gone to great lengths to understand and incorporate the fibers, sewing machines and screen printing techniques of the 60’s and 70’s. The soft feel and sporty retro styles evoke Venice summers long past. The tag on each piece sums up the Aviator Nation experience in one sentence, “this garment is rad.”

BackYard Lounge Recap

Big Thanks to everyone who came out to our first ever BackYard Lounge event!!
It was a huge success thanks to all of our fun-loving and creative neighbors who came out to celebrate.

In addition to it being First Friday, it was also Neighborhood’s first birthday!
In honor of the occasion, our friend Michelle made adorable cupcakes complete with our mascot on top.

DJ Trick Turner - looking stylish in a Neighborhood sweater, provided great energy throughout the evening with his signature sounds spinning late into the night.
Be on the lookout for his own records being released soon on the Juxtaphone label.

Urbanic’s Shrinky Dink Project was a big hit!
Audrey slaved over the toaster oven all night, carefully tending to the shrinking masterpieces that our friends created.
I hear that many people even traded their shrinkies with one another as part of the good-natured camaraderie of the evening.

My favorite part had to be the amazing wine tasting provided by Venice Beach Wines – hosted by owner Oscar Hermasillo and Johnnie Jenkins.

Neighborhood just got some great summer dresses from Staci Woo!

Sorry for the obvious pun, but really, we love these dresses.

much needed space…

Ever since some of our favorite lines like Supermaggie and FluffyCo starting making baby tees, our kid’s section has been packed to the brim. Baby onesies and tees were folded in precarious stacks, sometimes 10 deep. It was clear we needed more space, but if you have seen the size of the store, you understand that expanding would be no small feat.

Nevertheless, after months of planning and building, we’ve managed to give the kid’s area some much needed space and add a second dressing room.*

*All planning and building was done by Joshua. Audrey, Javin, Celia and Cristin contributed moral support.

first friday

It’s officially summer time!

OK, not officially, but it certainly feels like since I spent the better part of the weekend cruising the beach on my new bike. (I have the sunburn to prove it.)

Another definitive rite of summer is First Fridays on Abbot Kinney which kicks into full gear this Friday, May 2nd. It’s a celebration of the Venice creative community featuring art openings, live music and in-store events. Shops and galleries are open until 10 p.m.!

Stop by Neighborhood to check out our new tees and dresses and have some refreshments to start off the evening.
